Los Angeles police discovered a huge cache of fireworks inside a South Los Angeles home that prompted evacuations of nearby houses and an investigation by major crimes detectives.
A domestic violence arrest warrant was served about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday on the 100 block of East 85th Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
One person was arrested at the scene once the warrant was served, and a bomb squad was called in to investigate the fireworks cache, an officer said.
Nearby homes were evacuated during the investigation, and the bomb squad hauled out boxes of what were described as consumer-grade pyrotechnic devices, enough to fill more than three box trucks, according to investigators at the scene.
People who were inside the home were detained pending an investigation by LAPD Major Crimes Division detectives, while detectives from the LAPD’s 77th Street Station were in charge of the domestic violence investigation.
A police captain at the scene said that while the fireworks were consumer grade, the huge volume made them a particular threat should a fire break out or if they somehow became ignited.
The fireworks find comes after a fire in a converted garage May 9 led to the detonation of pyrotechnics that reportedly blew a man’s body apart on the 2400 block of Ninth Avenue in the Jefferson Park area.
