A teenage boy was arrested in Lakewood on Friday, May 29, a day after he allegedly fatally shot another teenager in North Long Beach, authorities said.

Long Beach police were called to East Plymouth Street and Cedar Avenue, about a block east of Long Beach Boulevard, just past 12:30 p.m. Thursday, where they found a 15-year-old boy with a gunshot wound, police said.

The victim was taken to a hospital, but he died, police said.

On Friday, homicide detectives identified the suspect as another 15-year-old boy and took him into custody in Lakewood, police said. A more specific location of the arrest was not known.

The teen was booked into Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall on suspicion of murder and minor in possession of a firearm, police said. He was being held without bail.

Neither the suspect nor the victim were immediately identified by police. The victim’s identity was withheld pending notification of his relatives.

“I am deeply troubled by the killing of a 15 year old and it is extremely alarming that the suspect believed to be responsible is also 15 years old,” Long Beach Police Chief Wally Hebeish said in a statement. “The Long Beach Police Department will never allow youth violence to be normalized in our community.”

He said detectives worked nonstop before taking the boy into custody and secured critical evidence.

Further information regarding the circumstances surrounding the shooting was not available.
