The Los Angeles School Police Department had extra patrols on the campus of Sepulveda Middle School on Thursday, April 16, one day after a teenager was injured in a shooting nearby.

The shooting occurred shortly after 3 p.m. in the 15300 block of Plummer Street, two blocks east of Sepulveda Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

One juvenile victim, believed to be 17 years old, was taken to a hospital in unknown condition.

According to media reports from the scene, an altercation occurred outside the school leading to the shooting, with the victim was shot in a thigh.

A 13-year-old juvenile believed to be a student at the middle school was named as a suspect, LAPD Officer Rosario Cervantes said.

According to the Los Angeles Unified School District, the victim was not a student at the school.

NBC4 reported that the victim was walking toward the school to pick up a younger sibling. The victim did not appear to be targeted by the shooter, the station reported.
