Suspected DUI driver arrested in fatal hit-and-run in Van Nuys

A suspected DUI driver who police said fled the scene of a deadly crash in Van Nuys on Monday, May 4 has been arrested, authorities said.

Jose Maranon, 40, of North Hollywood, was driving a white Mercedes south on Van Nuys Boulevard, approaching Sherman Way at an unsafe speed at around 10:25 p.m., police said, when he allegedly struck a man walking across a marked crosswalk.

The man was thrown and hit the roadway, the Los Angeles Police Department said in a news release. He was declared dead at the scene. His identity has not been released, pending notification of his family.

After police located Maranon and the car, he was booked into Van Nuys Jail on suspicion of murder, and his bail was set at $2 million, police said.

It was not immediately clear what led police to Maranon.
