The Wall That Heals, the three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., was escorted on Tuesday by LAPD “black and whites” and LAPD motorcycle officers, volunteers in cars and motorcycle clubs at the starting point at Woodley Park in Van Nuys.
The procession moved along some Valley main streets and through some neighborhoods — passing the Sepulveda VA (Haskell Avenue/Plummer Street/Woodley Avenue) in North Hills along the way — Devonshire Street, Reseda Boulevard, Victory Boulevard to De Soto Avenue and its destination for three days at Pierce College in Woodland Hills.
Special ceremonies for the public to attend: A “Welcome Home” opening, 6 p.m. Thursday; a “Light the Night Candlelight,” gathering, 7:30 p.m. Friday; a “Taps” sunset ceremony, 7:07 p.m. Saturday, and a “Closing” ceremony, 1:45 p.m. Sunday.
The Wall will be available to visit 24-hours from the opening ceremony to 2 p.m. Sunday.
The replica — listing the names of the 58,281 men and women in the U.S. Armed Forces who died during the Vietnam war — is accompanied by a mobile education center about the war and the history behind the establishment of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C.
“The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is pleased to bring The Wall That Heals mobile exhibit to Woodland Hills to allow local veterans and their family members a chance to experience The Wall,” said Jim Knotts, president and CEO of VVMF, in a press release.
“Hosting The Wall That Heals provides an opportunity to honor and remember all those who served and sacrificed in the Vietnam War and educate visitors on the continuing impact of the Vietnam War on America,” he said.
The traveling Wall honors the more than 3 million Americans who served in the U.S. Armed Forces during the Vietnam War. The Woodland Hills stop at Pierce College is one of only two stops in California — the other is Orland in Glenn County. The replica has been touring since 1996 and has stopped in more than 800 areas in the United States. In addition, it has made international stops in Canada and Ireland.

The Wall is made out of Avonite (a synthetic granite) and is 375 feet in length and stands 7.5 feet high at its tallest point. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C., designed by Maya Lin, allows visitors to do rubbings of individual service members’ names. The replica will have supplies for those who want to make a name rubbing, too.
Free admission and parking. Pierce College’s entrance for viewing The Wall is only from De Soto Avenue at the light signal at 7100 El Rancho Dr., Woodland Hills.
